The Sacramento Metropolitan Firefighters Association was created on December 1rst 2000, with the consolidation of former American River and Sacramento County Firefighters Associations. This new association was formed with a wide range of history and experience.
The American River Firefighters Association was formed with the merger of the Arden, Arcade, and Carmichael Fire Districts. The Association officially operated under the original articles of incorporation of the "Arcade Firemans Association". The name was later changed with the Secretary of States Office to the American River Firefighters Association. The official purpose for the Association was to encourage and promote good fellowship among American River Firefighters and their families and to provide public relations and community service to further the community/firefighter relationship.
Regular meetings and events were held throughout the year. Some of the favorite events were the Pancake Breakfast/Easter Egg hunt, Day on the River at honorary member and CHP Officer Dave Finleys home, golf tournaments and the annual Santa Nights. Aside from these events, the Association assisted with community events, donated money to the Burn Institute and sent flowers to members or family members in time of need. During the holiday season, needy families were selected to receive donations of food and presents.
The Sacramento County Firefighters Association was formed in 1989, following the merger of the Rancho Cordova and Citrus Heights Fire Protection Districts. The new Association adopted the bylaws of the former North Highlands Firefighters Association, with changes and modifications. It wasn't long before the Association became recognized by the Fire District and the communityas an asset that promoted camaraderie, community service, competitiveness and the spirit of the "Fire Family".
The Association supported many athletic events including co-sponsoring the 1996 and 2000 California Firefighters Olympics in Sacramento, the Burn Institute's Basketball tournament, men's and woman's softball teams, volleyball, hockey, running, Fireman's Musters, skiing, white-water rafting as well as various other outings.
Many of the events that the Sacramento County Firefighters Association celebrated were the traditions carried from their predecessor Firefighters Associations. Examples include the Firefighters Crab Feed, Adult and Children's Christmas Parties, Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween party, Wine Tour, Old Timers Dinner and Golf Tournament and Bowling Tournament. Several of the new events were also created, including the Battle of the Battalions Golf Tournament, Family Picnic Day, Shift Camp-Outs, Retirement Award Dinner, Dunk Hunts, Skeet Shooting Competition, American River Clean Up and the Shriners Children's Hospital Fishing Derby.
The Association regularly donated time and money toward the Sacramento Food Bank, the Cordova Food Locker, Easter Seals and many other Charities. The Sunshine Committee was instrumental in recognizing newborns within the Fire District as well as sending flowers or a donation with condolences to families in the event of a loved one passing away. The untimely deaths of several of our Firefighters brought out the true spirit of our Association. As devastating as the loss of one of our own, the Association, members unselfishly gave of their time, money and support to family members and friends. The Association was instrumental in developing the Widows and Orphans Fund. Ironically, the one member responsible for the success of the Sacramento County Firefighters Association unexpectedly passed away. Dean Baker served as president of the Association for several years. His passion for the Fire Service and his vision of a strong and unified association are reflected in the success!
of our organization. The Dean Baker Crab Feed was renamed in his honor. His spirit will continue to inspire the success of the Sacramento Metropolitan Firefighters Association.
